about

"I started writing this song way back in May, on a day when I must have washed my hands 17 times. I imagined it as two people prevented from a love affair by the rules of distancing during a pandemic. Then this summer's events and unrest inspired some of the lyrics to take on a call to action.

Part of the reason it took so long to put this song out is I really didn't know what it was supposed to sound like at first. The original demo is very sparse and slow, with just piano. I knew we were going to have to pep it up somehow, and I was inspired by recent works from my friends in The Belle Sounds as well as Phoebe Bridgers' new record.

As always, Brit delivered a haunting, powerful vocal performance with the help of our good friend Don Cento engineering, and perfectly captured the mood of the track. We hope you enjoy it, it's our favorite yet!" -Jason

lyrics

The air outside
Has a heavy heart
When I'm not breathing you
The light outside
Is a fading fire
When I'm not seeing you

But all it could take is one look my way
To start it all again

But I'll be careful, I'll be good
I will follow all your rules
I will keep my hands so clean
And forget what could have been

I never tried
To believe in love
But I believed in you
I never thought
I'd be satisfied
With what I see in you

And all it could take is one word you say
To get me to give in

But I'll be careful, I'll be good
I will follow all your rules
I will keep my hands so clean
And forget what could have been

I used to be the one
To bend without a fight
But I won't be the one
To lay down arms tonight

Cause I've been careful, I've been good
I have followed all your rules
I have kept my hands so clean
But can't forget what could have been
