about
Jason: "This summer, Brit and I were, like many people, feeling stressed by the demands of work under Covid and I wanted to write us a kind of pep talk about ours and our loved ones' experiences. I think we were all feeling like we needed a champion, someone to say 'you've got this!'"
On writing it: "Brit and I got the verses and chorus down, but then we needed a bridge. I had left a long section of drum loop where the bridge was supposed to go, and Brit added a cheerleader chant over that. But that was all we had. Finally we called our friend Don Cento, who had helped us out on "Farther", to see if he could come up with anything. We had a nice masked in-person writing session and in under an hour the three of us came up with the basic part. I added some synth lines on top of that and the song was done! For the group vocals, I had read something about how Roy Thomas Baker had done the vox on the Cars' first album and thought that something like that would work really well with this. Sure enough, I was pleased to discover it sounded just like it!"
lyrics
Every thankless job
Was somebody’s dream
You’re a human being
Not a machine
It’s like going to war
Without any guns
I've been calling for help
And still getting none
I need a champion
Someone who believes in what I've done
Someone who will tell me to keep on
When my own belief has gone
I need an advocate
Someone who will tell me I'm worth it
You don't have to be the only one
I need a champion
Nothing is the same
But nobody's changed
Every little pain
Is just rearranged
I’ve been screaming in rooms
Where no one can hear
I’ve been watching my pleas
Fall on deaf ears
I need a champion
Someone who believes in what I've done
Someone who will tell me to keep on
When my own belief has gone
I need an advocate
Someone who will tell me I'm worth it
You don't have to be the only one
I need a champion
With everyone out there
Feeling so low
I’ll do what I can to just
Let you know
I’ll be your champion
Someone who believes in what you’ve done
Someone who will tell you to keep on
When your own belief has gone
I’ll be your advocate
Someone who will tell you you’re worth it
I know I won’t be the only one
To be your champion
I’ll be your champion

they formed Cautiontape, a keyboard and synth-based electro pop band with Metric influences. After Cautiontape disbanded in 2016 and life changes for both, they rediscovered their creative partnership during 2020's pandemic and formed Jason & Brit as a home recording project....more
